One of Shrewsbury's fastest-growing sport gains further momentum
Shrewsbury International School, Riverside are ensuring the growth of Netball in our city remains strong with great coaching, involvement in tournaments and friendly matches between schools. As evidenced recently by a fixture between Shrewsbury and Bangkok Prep, where the school fielded over 80 students in three age-grades, the promotion and participation of Netball is alive and well.
The sport itself is hugely popular in commonwealth countries and requires agility, speed, balance and a team-first mentality. Introduced into the Shrewsbury sporting curriculum in 2017, it is fast becoming a popular sport for girls and boys.
Shrewsbury Netball coach, Ms Carly Walton was thrilled at the turnout and the level of competition which gave students from both schools a good chance to put their skills to the test.
“With the upcoming Netball Festival - an open event for all students to attend netball workshops - planned for November, it was great to get a taste of what Netball can look like as part of the wider sporting programme across the city. I am so proud of all of those that took part and look forward to more matches and tournaments very soon,” She explained.
The friendly atmosphere brought by Bangkok Prep will almost certainly be replicated when our sides make the return journey on the 5th of November.
Shrewsbury's commitment to Netball is evidenced by the full-size championship netball court being designed into the new sports facility, opening in 2021. Excitingly, the Thai Women’s Netball Squad will train and play at the facility, bringing even more expertise to the programme.
