Our Resources

With Shrewsbury’s focus on scholarship and the English Language, and bridging the space between the Junior and Senior School buildings, the library is both symbolic and physical heart of our community.

The library offers resources and programs designed to foster a lifelong love of books and reading, and to help students develop critically important research and digital literacy skills.

With a collection of more than 30,000 books and periodicals, a robust selection of online resources, and specialised e-book platforms for students in the Junior and Senior Schools, the Library aims to meet the needs of all learners. Parents, Nannies and Staff also have access to our collection of books and online resources. Check out the Just for Parents page for tips and hints on using the library and helping your child to read.

We also have a low tech “makerspace”, where Junior School children can explore and create with a variety of crafts. The Library staff design weekly challenges, which students can complete at break or lunch. The space features a LEGO wall and offers opportunities for students to tinker and explore.

How the Library is Used

All Junior School classes visit the library for at least one lesson every week, utilizing the resources and reading spaces to conduct planned reading activities, then to return and borrow books. Students in Years 3 to 6 may also use the library independently both before and after school (under the supervision of a Parent or Carer), and at break time and lunch time on their allocated days.

In the Senior School, all students from Years 7-10 visit the library for at least one lesson every 10 day cycle as part of the English curriculum. All Senior school students have independent access to the library and its study areas, both before and after school, at break and lunch times and during independent study periods.

Other Library Services

For students in the Pre-Prep School, there are weekly story times in the library, offered in both English and Thai. The Librarian also makes weekly visits to the Early Years gardens to read stories with children in the Early Years programme. The Librarian and Assistant Librarian also offer after school activities through Shrewsbury’s “You-Time!” programme with a reading club called ChatterBooks where children in Years 3 and 4 explore and discuss books on a set theme such as Funny Stories, Fantasy or Animal Stories. Each session includes fun book related activities.

In the Senior School, the Librarian works closely with a number of departments to encourage meaningful pleasure reading and to help students better understand the research process. Students learn about the ethical use of sources, as well as where and how to find information. The Librarian works with the English Department and others to develop pleasure reading lists for Key Stage 3 and 4, as well as academic reading lists for students in the Sixth Form.

Electronic Resources

The Library subscribes to a number of electronic resources which can be accessed from home. For the Pre-Prep School we have Tumblebooks which are animated stories designed to help those learning to read. In year 6 and the Senior School we have Overdrive a collection of ebooks. Parents can have their own account to access this collection themselves. Please request an account by emailing the Librarian stephanie.r@shrewsbury.ac.th

To help with homework, assignments and independant discovery we have a wide variety of online journals and databases for all ages all of which can be found via the Library Blog. 

Not sure what to read next? Finished all the books in your favourite series? This year we have added a brand new resource Who Next...? which will help you to find out authors who write similar sort of stories to your favourite author.

Special Events and Activities

The library also organizes a number of special events throughout the school year. There are workshops for parents, workshops for nannies/helpers, book fairs, a family reading challenge, and more. Recent author visits have included well-known storyteller, David Bedford, and the British and European slam poetry champion, Sara Hirsch.

Shrewsbury is part of a network of school who organise The Bangkok Book Awards. This takes place in the spring term and the winner is chosen by our students. Look out for displays on the library blog and in the library. Read all the titles and vote for your favourite.

The highlight of the library calendar is Fully Booked week, a weeklong celebration of reading, which features a house storytelling competition, a reading fair, costume days, a book swap, a book cover competition, library contests, special storytimes, and more.
