Late December saw the finest Shrewsbury squash players battle it out to see who would be crowned school champion in each age group. The competition was fierce with some upsets in each category, proving the high level at which Shrewsbury’s squash players operate.

In the Junior Boys, Year 5 Vivaan Satchathamrat and Siwach (Otto) Ratanapitaksakul played out an exciting final with Vivaan coming out on top. Otto can’t be displeased with his effort given he is one year younger than his opponent, however.

In the Senior Girls final, Year 7 prodigy, Kourtney Wong came up trumps against a spirited display of hitting against much older, Year 12 Thanathida (Jenny) Wisesdenchai. Coach Terry Cheetham speaks highly of both Kourtney and Jenny, noting they have a bright future in the sport.

Meanwhile, the Senior Boys Division 1 final saw the upset of the day as Elite Gold Team Shrewsbury athlete, Sakkarin (Jedi) Wijitthanarak was unseated as school champion by Year 10 student, Apiban (Third) Chamnanchang. Director of Sport and fascinated spectator, Mr Paul Rotheram said the match was a great battle and would have done as much for Third’s confidence as it did for Jedi’s resilience -knowing now he has a serious interschool challenger.

“That is sport. You cannot get too complacent. Jedi is a wonderful player - 3rd in his age group in Thailand. He will bounce back. You have to hand it to Third, though. He played a fantastic game and should be commended on his ability to capitalise on Jedi’s unforced errors.” he said.
