TERM 1 REVIEW 2020-21

NEW INDUCTEES TO TEAM SHREWSBURY RECOGNISED

Shrewsbury International School is proud to induct 15 new members to the elite group of sportspeople who make up Team Shrewsbury. 13 new members enter the team at the third tier, Elite Bronze whilst two two new inductees for 2020-21 have impressed the sports department so greatly that they are designated as tier 2 Elite Silver athletes from the outset.

In addition to the new athletes, 16 sportspeople have continued to thrive in the competitive environment, subsequently being promoted to either Elite Silver (13) and Elite Gold (3). Honoured at a ceremony with their families looking on, Director of Sport Mr Paul Rotheram gave thanks to their efforts representing the school in a range of disciplines.

"The students here are carefully selected to reflect the best Shrewsbury Sport has to offer. In a truncated year, we have been very fortunate to be able to compete and the students you see here have managed to transcend those difficulties and represent the school with pride and significant skill," he insisted.

Many of the new Elite Bronze students are from the all-conquering J.V. Football squad, who went undefeated, capping off a fantastic season with a win in the BISAC final. Included alongside the footballers were star performers in volleyball, badminton, touch rugby and swimming too, showing the breadth of talent at the school.

Meanwhile, Akshat Jain and Sahatsawat (Perth) Ariyanon entered Team Shrewsbury straight into Elite Silver in their final year at Shrewsbury on the back of some excellent performances on the Basketball court for the Varsity squad.

A healthy cohort of Touch Rugby players - mainly representatives from the girls' sides - were either inducted or elevated into Team Shrewsbury, reflecting the growing popularity in the sport and exceptional coaching staff guiding them along.

The most prestigious Elite Gold status is reserved for athletes who are performing not only at the top of school, but also gaining accolades at a Bangkok or national level. Thus, just three new members join the upper echelon of athletes this year. Given the requirements, it was no surprise that Sakkarin (Jedi) Wijitthanarak is now an Elite Gold athlete after a string of fine performances gained him selection to the Thai National Junior Squash Team. A humble Jedi was quick to thank Thailand and Shrewsbury squash guru, Terry Cheetham; saying he motivates him to be better every day.

Joining Jedi, are Naphon (Shaab) Jotikabukkana and Teeka (Tee) Srivikorn) who both impress in two separate sports - Basketball and Football. Their dedication is getting noticed by clubs outside of Shrewsbury's walls, increasing their chances to continue their sporting careers after Senior School.

With 49 athletes representing Shrewsbury, younger, aspiring sportspeople have a wonderful group of role models to gain inspiration from, ensuring that sport at Shrewsbury goes from strength to strength.
