The school’s team of elite athletes have been chosen for this year, with nine new faces included within a 49-strong group of students selected to represent Shrewsbury sport at the highest level.

In traditional fashion, the students were honoured at a special lunch on Wednesday 4th December, attended by families, coaches and members of staff including Principal, Chris Seal.

“To try and become a member of Team Shrewsbury remains a highly competitive endeavour", Mr Seal notes. "It requires sustained excellence in their chosen disciplines. These forty-nine young athletes are great role models in this regard”.

In order to be considered for Team Shrewsbury honours, students must demonstrate significant skill in their chosen sport, whatever that may be, as well as the ambition and application to take their talent further, including a clear interest in pursuing sport beyond Shrewsbury.

It is no surprise then that a number of Team Shrewsbury alumni have gone on to have successful sporting careers at university and beyond. Notable examples include 2018 alumni, Gigi Thien who now plies her trade at UCLA – playing both Basketball and Volleyball - and Class of 2013 alumna, Jackie Chulya - a current professional golfer who studied at Columbia University attaining All-Ivy League honours a record three times. Looking ahead, there are high hopes that current Team Shrewsbury Gold athlete and Shrewsbury Golf captain, Vicki Tip-Aucha, will go on to achieve big things too, having recently been accepted onto Penn State's golf scholarship programme.

Of the 49 students selected onto Team Shrewsbury for 2019-20, 25 are at bronze level, 10 are at silver level (including 6 promoted from Bronze level) and 14 have been named at gold level (including 9 promoted from Silver level).

Director of Sports, Mr Paul Rotheram says that Team Shrewsbury honours are presented as a way of recognising the effort that athletes put into training and competing for the school's own teams, or as representatives of the school in individual competitions.

“Team Shrewsbury is a way of encouraging students’ performances through increased access to strength and conditioning programmes, workshops and seminars that will give them the mental and physical edge in competition”.

One thing is for sure, the current list has bucket-loads of potential and we are looking forward to tracking the progress of this years’ athletes.
