MEET TEACHER PETER

“Give children the freedom to play and explore in a creative and holistic way”

“I have a degree in Theatre Design. I worked in theatre for 15 years, then retrained as a teacher. I have been teaching now for 15 years. I was at Raintree International School in Bangkok before coming to Shrewsbury;  I have been teaching Early Years 2 at Shrewsbury for the last year.”

How I stay up-to-date on the latest teaching methods: “I use Twitter a great deal. It is brilliant for developing pedagogical knowledge. Check out @oakwoodEY, @estherOConner5, @Joolone, @kymscott5, and myself @winderley.”

My favourite thing about teaching at SHB: “The outdoor space. It gives the children freedom to play and explore in a creative and holistic way.”

How I approach Early Years education: “Always placing the child at the centre of what I do. Using schemas and child development knowledge to extend, challenge, and move learning forward. Simple activities such as cooking and sewing are often overlooked, but the children love them and support their learning in many different areas of the curriculum.”
