19 Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards for Shrewsbury Students

  • 8 Top in the World, 11 Top in Thailand Awards

  • Awards across 12 different subjects

  • 281 Cambridge Awards since 2003

Students at Shrewsbury International School Bangkok Riverside are celebrating yet more recognition for their outstanding performance in this year's IGCSE, AS Level and A level exams.

Following August's examination results, in which 59% of the 1,300 IGCSE exams taken by Shrewsbury students scored the top A* / 8+ grade, and 65% of the 391 A levels taken scored A/A* grade, the Cambridge Assessment International Examination Board has now announced that 17 of its annual Outstanding Learner Awards go to Shrewsbury students this year, marking the best individual performances in their respective subject exams both in Thailand and across the World.

Shrewsbury's awards are achieved in a huge range of subjects, from Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Combined Sciences and Psychology, to Economics, Art & Design, Design Technology, First Language Thai, and Literature in English. In addition to her Top in the World award for Literature in English, Torfun (Tori) Chittmittrapap, takes the "Best Across 8 subjects" award, for her all-round performance, which included 11 A*s and 1 A grade. The haul brings to 281 the number of Cambridge awards earned by Shrewsbury students in its 20 year history, and with around one third of exams now taken through the Pearson Edexcel examination board, further success expected when they announce their own newly-introduced annual awards shortly.

"These awards from the Cambridge exam board serve as further, well-deserved recognition for our students", said Riverside Principal, Robert Millar. "Our examination cohorts achieved another incredible set of results this year, especially in the context of the pandemic. Nearly 60 of our IGCSE students - around half of the entire year group -  achieved 7 or more A* grades, earning a record number of Sixth Form scholarships and setting them up brilliantly for their chosen A level courses. Our Year 12 AS results too bode well for an equally strong set of A level results next summer, whilst the A level qualifications already achieved by the Class of 2022 have taken them to world leading universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Brown, Princeton and UPenn.  It really does demonstrate the outstanding work that goes on in every one of our academic departments, and the passion for learning that is nurtured within Shrewsbury students across the huge range STEM and Humanities courses that are delivered by highly skilled and dedicated subject specialists"

Amongst the award winners are four students who are now following their university dreams at world leading universities; Princeton, Parsons, Rhode Island School of Design and Warwick. Por, Top in Thailand for A level Economics and now a freshman at Princeton University comments:

"It is really amazing to win this award. I think it represents the hard work and effort I put into getting the most out of my education at Shrewsbury. I really loved the Economics A level course, particularly the macro-economics. It really helped me to understand some of the big factors affecting policy-making, and my teachers were really helpful at helping me understand the concepts as applied to real-world situations. Ultimately that has provided a solid foundation for my understanding of finance, which is proving really helpful here at Princeton. The level of mathematics I studied at Shrewsbury is also now helping me take the harder mathematics courses here, and as a whole, I feel the experiences I had at school, and the way I learnt to balance my interests at Shrewsbury, are now helping me to get the most out of my university experience and to organise my academics, pre-professional activities and social life too".

Meanwhile, artist Prow, wins an unprecedented 32nd Cambridge award for Shrewsbury's Art & Design department; part of an incredible legacy and evidence that alongside the technical and medical futures often associated with Shrewsbury graduates (1 in 6 Graduates progressed medical courses this year), that Shrewsbury prepares students to follow their passions wherever they may lead, including the creative industries. Prow, who has embarked on her studies at Parsons in New York, says: "Winning this award was only made possible due to the collective support of the Shrewsbury Art Department; the dedication of the technicians, and the experienced guidance of the Shrewsbury art teachers. Most of all, though, I want to thank my peers, who were my source of inspiration and created an uplifting working environment in the studio."

Prow continues, "The freedom and flexibility of the A level course at Shrewsbury has allowed me to explore many mediums and discover my love of printmaking and communication design. It has also prepared me for the rigorous workload and provided me with the skills required to excel here at one of the world's top art schools here at Parsons."

And as for the AS level and IGCSE award winners who are yet to complete their full A level studies, the awards provide further motivation to progress towards equally ambitious university destinations.

Hoping that his Computer Science award will bolster his Cambridge application, Year 13 Raemon comments "It's been an incredible 10-year journey for me at Shrewsbury. I just hope that all the work, advice and specialist support I've received helps me achieve my university ambitions. In many ways, if I do make it to Cambridge…. it will be a team effort. At Shrewsbury people are really invested in helping each other to achieve their goals. ….Students here have amazing opportunities to find their passions and to excel in whatever interests them. That's allowed me to aim for one of the very best universities in the world and an undergraduate programme that is absolutely the right fit for me."

Meanwhile, having arrived at Shrewsbury just one year ago, fellow computer scientist Aash, now also has her sights set on Cambridge or MIT. "I'm incredibly proud to have won this award," she says, "and I need to credit the teachers and classmates for the support they gave me along the way. My family only moved to Bangkok last year, and I had to adapt to a new GCSE syllabus very quickly, and due to COVID, all of this was online at first. However, the teachers made themselves available to help me at any time, and I found my classmates were just so open about sharing ideas and helping each other; it is an amazing community here. All in all it’s been brilliant to be able to meet a lot of talented people here at Shrewsbury - students and staff - and to to be named alongside so many of them in this awards list, it really feels amazing".
