TERM 2 REVIEW 2019-20

YEAR 3 SEE THE LIGHT

Year 3 had no idea what was waiting for them as they gathered in their classroom to begin their new Science topic. Students were presented with an obscure photo depicting light, darkness and colour, and were asked to analyse what it might be.

Drawing on their own experiences and their prior knowledge of the world, predictions included DNA, an X-ray image or a painting.

Students then ventured out of the primary school building and over to the Creative Arts block. The school’s black box drama room was the perfect setting for students to investigate the effects of light infiltrating darkness.

The obscure photo was revealed - a plasma ball, creating fascinating beams of coloured light. The children’s new Science topic of ‘Light and Shadows' was brought to life! Students continued to experiment with flashlights by making shadow animals on the walls.

This interactive learning experience of one of many examples of Shrewsbury’s topic-based learning approach. Our teaching is designed to be meaningful and purposeful, putting learning into real-life contexts, with a deeper understanding gained and greater connections made.
