UNMASKING THAI DANCE

As part of the Thai Studies programme at City Campus, Year 3 were given a fascinating insight into the theory and practice of khon. 

Khon is a form of traditional Thai dance, which depicts stories of pursuit, strength and heroism. Experts from Prasarnmit Demonstration School (Secondary) led Year 3 students in their very own masterclass in this beautiful performing art.

The intrigue and the drama of khon was a perfect way to foster a love for traditional Thai dance. 

The children were also amazed to learn that each traditional Khon costume takes up to 3 months to make, and then 1 hour for the dancer to get dressed. After learning the dance themselves, Year 3 were treated to a full performance from our visiting dancers. 

Two khon dancers in full costume took to the floor in the school’s Recital Hall to give students an exclusive performance of a famous khon tale, depicting the monkey warrior Hanuman pursuing his piscine bride Suvannamaccha.

Kru Earl, the school’s Head of Thai Studies said, “This workshop was a new experience for our students...the costumes, the masks, the characters, and the dance itself...all the elements were inspiring for our children.”
