TERM 1 REVIEW 2019-20

CITY CAMPUS UPS THE TEMPO

City Campus was delighted to announce that Ms Irina Novikova will be sharing her expertise with the school’s growing Music department. Ms Irina’s reputation at Shrewsbury goes before her, following her success at Riverside for the last 15 years. As part of Shrewsbury’s commitment to offering outstanding musical opportunities to its students, Ms Irina will now be spending one day a week teaching selected pupils at City Campus.

Irina Novikova was Deputy Director of the Svelanov Music School in Moscow for 10 years, before taking a position as Head of Piano at Shrewsbury Riverside. She has been recognised around the world for the excellence of her teaching, and her students have consistently won prizes and awards on the global stage.

City Campus hosted an information event in the Recital Hall, for interested families to meet Ms Irina and hear about her teaching methods and the selection process for students that wish to take up this special opportunity.

Our Director of Schools, Mr Stephen Holroyd who appointed Ms Irina to Shrewsbury writes: “It has been a great privilege to work at Shrewsbury over 15 years with so many outstanding teachers, but Ms Irina is truly special. Her teaching is unique, inspirational and life-changing for those young people fortunate enough to work with her. Her teaching programme is intense and demanding, but the rewards are astonishing. I am delighted that City Campus families will be able to benefit from the influence of this world-class musician.”

Our founding Music teacher, Ms Sarah Bull, has established a strong music curriculum at City Campus, ensuring our students have access to a variety of musical opportunities and one-to-one tuition. The department quickly saw waiting lists emerge for lessons with its professional piano, violin and voice tutors.

In response to the growing student population at City Campus, the school also welcomes two new recruits to its full-time music staff team. Ms Faith Klein brings over 20 years of international primary and secondary music teaching experience to the school, from teaching roles spanning 3 continents. She teaches piano, violin and a host of other instruments.

Ms Yeji Yoon joins us as this year’s ‘Musician in Residence’. Yeji is a Shrewsbury alumnus from Riverside. She has a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Royal College of Music in London, and she teaches piano and harp.
