article Riverside Junior SHR ArticleCanadian-British filmmaker and cartoonist Matt Smith, known for his humorous autobiographical series Smith vs Smith (found at smithvssmith.com), recently visited Shrewsbury International School Bangkok Riverside. Matt’s comics have been published in various newspapers in British Columbia. In May 2018, he facilitated a panel on creating comics at the Vancouver Comics Arts Festival.
During his sessions with Year 6’s, Matt explored the art of visual storytelling, emphasising the impact of camera shots and angles in film and comics. Students learned how technical choices shape narratives and evoke emotions, enhancing their storytelling skills.
Reflecting on his visit, Matt praised the school’s growth mindset and shared his passion for teaching. “I love diving deep into film and comics with students and educators, exploring the effort behind effective storytelling,” he said.
His advice to students? “Always create. Every project builds your skills. Share your work—it’s the best way to grow.” For teachers, he emphasised the power of comics in education: “Visual storytelling deepens our understanding of narrative and emotion.”
