Holistic Education in Action: Inspiring Future Healthcare Leaders at Shrewsbury Riverside

article Outstanding Opportunities Riverside Senior Riverside Sixth form SHR Article

On Monday 27th January 2025, Shrewsbury International School Bangkok Riverside hosted a Higher Education talk on dental pathways. The session, led by Dr. Yupares Nimkarn, the current chairperson of Operation Smile, provided valuable insights into the profession and her own career journey.

Shrewsbury Riverside students have long supported Operation Smile in their humanitarian missions, helping provide cleft lip and palate surgeries to those in need. Their involvement spans from assisting with preparations before surgery to offering post-operative care for young patients. This long standing partnership fostered a genuine interest in the healthcare and dental fields among students, many of whom were eager to explore this as a potential career path.

The talk was structured as an engaging Q&A session, where Dr. Nimkarn shared her personal experiences and professional advice. Students were captivated by her career story, learning that passion and adaptability are key to success in dentistry. Her story emphasised that while career paths may not always be linear, opportunities for growth are always present.

Several students shared their takeaways from the session.

Lucy (Lu) Seirinakis , Year 11, was particularly inspired by Dr. Nimkarn’s journey and stated that “her passion carried her through her career and how she took on new opportunities to help herself grow and evolve as not only a person but as an Orthodontist”.

Chanokteera (Blink) Ruechuseth, Year 12, appreciated “Dr. Nimkarn’s advice about balancing passion with practicality and considering a “plan B” when pursuing such a demanding career”.

Punnawit (Punt) Kecharananta, Year 12,  found Dr. Nimkarn’s insights on the evolving nature of dentistry and the legal challenges she faced particularly enlightening.

Overall, the session provided Shrewsbury students with a deeper understanding of dental careers and offered practical guidance for those considering this path.

We look forward to continuing supporting our students by giving them a breadth of experiences through specialised talks and workshops.
