Respect: Nobel Peace and Shrewsbury Houses
SHC Principal's Blog SHC TeacherAs we start the new academic year, our focus is on Respect. Respect is about seeing the value in everyone—our friends, classmates, teachers, our community and even our world around us. ‘Respect’ connects with so many other values we care about: kindness, courage, fairness, patience, and empathy to name but a few.
At Shrewsbury Bangkok, our Houses are named after six Nobel Peace Prize winners, and their lives and legacy remind us what respect can achieve and what they stood for.

King House – Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that respect is about treating others with love and compassion.
Malala House– Malala Yousafzai shows that respecting others means valuing their rights and dreams, especially those whose voices are often unheard.
Mandela House – Nelson Mandela reminds us that respect can mean forgiving and understanding, even when it’s hard.

Schweitzer House– Albert Schweitzer inspires us to respect different cultures and backgrounds, building bridges between people.
Teresa House– Mother Teresa lived a life of kindness and selflessness, seeing dignity in everyone she met.
Williams House– Jody Williams demonstrates that respecting human rights helps create a fairer, safer world.

Respect isn’t just saying “please” and “thank you.” It’s about listening, caring, standing up for what’s right, and noticing the value in others—even and especially when they are different from you.
In a world that changes fast, our hope is that we carry respect with us in our inner compass and as our cornerstone—in classrooms, around school, at home, in our communities and online. Showing and valuing respectful behaviour helps us grow, not only as individuals, but as a community and as a world .
