Sustainability
SHC Principle's BlogAs the scorching heat of April envelops Thailand, I reflect on over a decade of living here and notice a significant increase in temperatures this year. This surge in heat may be a consequence of global warming, a pressing issue that aligns with our value for this month – Sustainability.
Sustainability, a fusion of “sustain” and “ability,” embodies the concept of persisting in our actions while possessing the capability to do so. At our school, we instil in our students the significance of sustainable practices, emphasising enduring efforts over fleeting pleasures.
Sustainability is often associated with environmental conservation, encompassing actions to safeguard our planet, but it extends to various aspects of our daily lives. This could start from ourselves, our home, our community; from simple acts like switching off lights when unnecessary to using reusable water bottles instead of disposable ones, or embracing the mantra of reduce, reuse, recycle – every small step contributes to a greener future.
Sustainability can also encompass a holistic approach to living. In the context that is closer to our school community, sustainability can also convey the message in terms of education. Our students are encouraged to view learning not merely as a means to pass exams or grades but as a lifelong journey towards becoming knowledgeable and skilled individuals – lifelong learners.
Ultimately, sustainability is about nurturing practices that endure, whether in protecting our environment or fostering continuous personal growth. It starts with us, shaping a collective commitment to a sustainable future.
