Be Like the Eggplant Flowers
SHC Article SHC Principle's BlogAs we begin the 2024-25 academic year, our value of the month is Respect – a guiding principle as we start the new school year.
One of the most meaningful expressions of respect we’ve experienced this month was during the Wai Kru ceremony, a beautiful Thai tradition where students show their gratitude, appreciation and respect for their teachers. It’s a moment that touches the heart, as students offer symbolic items on a plate, each with a special meaning. Among these offerings, the eggplant flower stands out.
Value of the Month “Respect”
Humility and Respect
The eggplant flower teaches us so much. As it bows low when it nears fruiting, the eggplant flower symbolises humility and respect. It reminds us that as we grow, we must remain grounded, remembering to honour those who support and guide us along the way. This is the true essence of respect – recognising that no matter how much we achieve, there is always room for gratitude and humility.
“We see you, we appreciate you, and we value the wisdom and care you share with us as we begin this school year.”
Students presented flowers like the eggplant to their teachers as a sign of respect and gratitude. It’s their way of saying, “We see you, we appreciate you, and we value the wisdom and care you share with us as we begin this school year.”
As we look forward to a year full of learning and growth, I invite us all to keep the lesson of the eggplant flower in our hearts. Just as the flower bends down in humility, we too should approach our learning with open hearts and minds. To be like the eggplant flower means to stay humble, to listen, to ask questions, and to offer kindness and support to one another.
Stay Humble,
Listen,
Ask Questions,
Offer Kindness,
Support to One Another

When we show respect to our teachers, classmates, and ourselves, we build a strong, kind community where everyone can thrive. It is in this atmosphere of respect that we will truly flourish together.
