Inclusion

Our Spotlight SHC Article SHC Principle's Blog

Inclusion is a powerful concept, and its significance resonates deeply within our school community.

By a dictionary definition, inclusion refers to the act of including someone or something as part of a group, or a person or thing that is included. At Shrewsbury International School Bangkok City Campus, we see inclusion as an important value.

“Inclusion means fostering mutual respect and understanding.”

To us, inclusion means fostering mutual respect and understanding, and empowering our students to appreciate the many backgrounds that enrich our community. We weave this value into our educational experiences and celebrations, creating opportunities for students to practise inclusion in meaningful ways.

Recent examples are our annual Diwali and Loy Krathong celebrations. While these beautiful festivals are traditionally celebrated within Indian and Thai cultures; at City Campus, these culturally rich festivals become opportunities for unity. We use these celebrations to demonstrate that we can honour different cultures together, regardless of our individual backgrounds. They remind us of the importance of recognising and appreciating what connects us, even as we celebrate our differences.

Another recent highlight was our International Week, a time to celebrate our community’s incredible diversity. During this week, parents from various backgrounds joined us in the library to share stories from their home cultures. It was a powerful experience for our students, who witnessed firsthand the unique traditions that shape each family’s heritage. Our assembly and language activities helped students see that, although we may speak different languages, we are united by a common desire to understand and support one another.

“Diversity is a gift—a source of strength and beauty in our community.”

Through these celebrations and our daily interactions, we remind our students that diversity is a gift—a source of strength and beauty in our community. I’m grateful to lead a school that not only values inclusion but actively lives it, teaching our students the importance of empathy, respect, and connectedness.
