Hearts That Understand
Our Spotlight SHC Article SHC Principle's Blog SHC TeacherEmpathy is our Value of the Month for May, something that feels especially fitting as we mark Mental Health Week this month as well. Empathy plays a vital role in our mental well-being —not just for ourselves, but for those around us. It is the foundation of a compassionate, inclusive society.

At Shrewsbury International School Bangkok City Campus, we talk a great deal about empathy, but more importantly, we try to live it—every day. Empathy goes beyond sympathy. It’s not just about recognising how others feel, it’s about respecting those feelings and responding to them with care. When we practise empathy, we help create a school culture where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

You’ll see this value shine through during our Floreat Awards, a prestigious Shrewsbury tradition where we recognise students not only for their achievements in academics, but also for the strength of character that reflects the Shrewsbury Values.
Time and again, what stands out in the nominations from our teachers is how our students treat others. Words like kind, considerate, thoughtful, and respectful appear over and over again.
That says something powerful about who our children are becoming…

In a world that is increasingly diverse, the ability to empathise and connect with others across cultures and experiences is more important than ever. It’s these qualities of heart and character that give me great hope for the future. These are the values that will guide our children well beyond their time at school—into adulthood, and into lives of purpose and compassion.
