Growing Through Self-Awareness
SHC Article SHC Principle's Blog SHC TeacherDuring the month of January, we are focusing on Self-Awareness, a powerful value that helps children (and adults) better understand themselves, reflect on their choices, and grow with confidence and purpose.
Self-awareness begins with understanding yourself. It means recognising your strengths, acknowledging your challenges, and becoming aware of your emotions and values. It is often described as looking into a mirror, not just seeing what is on the outside, but also noticing what is happening on the inside.

When we encourage children to be self aware, we invite them to ask meaningful questions: What am I really good at? What do I enjoy? How am I feeling right now? What might be causing that feeling? These moments help children make sense of their experiences and learn from them.
As the philosopher Socrates once said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom,” which is why I put this quote on our Value of the Month posters around the school. When children can name what they are good at and what they would like to improve, this understanding helps them set goals and make thoughtful decisions.

Self-awareness also supports emotional intelligence. By recognising and naming their feelings, children learn why they act in certain ways, how their actions affect others, and how they can make positive changes. These are essential skills for lifelong success.
At Shrewsbury Bangkok City Campus, we are committed to empowering every child to know themselves. Through our carefully designed learning experiences, opportunities, and a wide range of activities, we help children discover what motivates them, and where they would like to improve. Our aim is for each child to feel confident in who they are today, while being inspired about who they can become.
