Head of Percussion Ms Thayarat (Tommy) Sopolpong is the newest sponsored artist for renowned percussion company ‘Meinl’. She is the first Thai artist and only the second from Asia to become an official ambassador for the company’s equipment. A long-time user of the German manufacturer, Ms Tommy is honoured to be a part of the family and is looking forward to a fruitful relationship.

After a long history of playing in the Thai Philharmonic Orchestra and Thai  Symphony Orchestra, producing several acclaimed recordings,  and also teaching percussionists across the city - including head of Percussion at Shrewsbury - Ms Tommy was asked to submit a detailed portfolio of her work to Meinl’s head office in Germany.

“I have been using the products for a long time, so it ranks highly for me in terms of musical accomplishments. They manufacture the best equipment, and now I am one of their sponsored artists. It is a pretty cool feeling,” she enthused.

Shrewsbury International School has long been aware of her talent and for her ability to make her students improve and grow as musicians. Director of Music, Mr David Place is delighted with the news but says it comes as no surprise to those who know her.

“Ms Tommy is an awe-inspiring artist with a flawless technique. We at Shrewsbury are so happy for her. I am sure she will be a great ambassador for Meinl - as she is for Shrewsbury International School,” he insisted.

Ms Tommy says her focus at the moment is on supporting her students - especially following the difficulties of recent school closures -  one of the great qualities that we’re sure will make her a fantastic ambassador for her new ‘family’ - Meinl.

You can watch Tommy perform alongside other outstanding members of Shrewsbury’s music department in our recent virtual staff recital - part of a Term 2 concert series at Shrewsbury Riverside.
