STUDENTS CONQUOR BEBRAS CHALLENGE

Year 12 and Year 13 Shrewsbury Computer Science Students took part in the Bebras computational thinking competition with remarkable results.

An international initiative, Bebras is run in conjunction with Oxford University, aiming to promote computer science and computational thinking among school students of all ages.

The challenge involves utilising problem-solving techniques that software engineers use to write programs and applications. Students are asked to solve as many problems as they can in the allotted 40 minute time-frame.

The top 10% of participants qualify for the next round of the competition while the top 60 students overall are invited to attend Oxford University for the final round and celebration event.

We are delighted to announce that from 250,000 participants worldwide, four Shrewsbury Sixth Form students were top 10% and have qualified for the next round in March 2020. These students are Q Lin, Lisa Wu, Nathan Fowler and Kris Udomwongsa.

Additionally, Thien Udomsrirungruang finished top 60 in the world and has been invited to attend Hertford College and the Department of Computer Science at Oxford University for the final challenge to which he and his mum will attend.

For Thien this comes off the back of being awarded the Vice Principal's commendation for designing his own ‘python’ computer program in his own time. He has shown a real aptitude for computational thinking and hopes to attend Stanford after he completes his studies at Shrewsbury.

This is a fantastic achievement and we are proud of all our Computer Science students who took part in demonstrating their computational thinking skills.
