TERM 3 REVIEW 2018-19

RECITAL RETURN FOR ALUMNI MUSICIANS

The annual Alumni concert took place on 17th June, and saw the return of brother and sister combo Hyunsu Yoon and Yeji Yoon to the Recital Hall stage.

Performing on flute, Hyunsu graduated from Shrewsbury in 2011 and went on to study music performance at the University of Michigan. A Masters degree and Post Graduate performance certificate followed at the University of North Carolina. Hyunsu is currently working towards his Doctorate at the University of North Texas, where he is a teaching fellow.

Younger sister, Yeji (Class of 2014) has just completed her undergraduate course at London's Royal College of Music, where she will be succeeded by Class of 2019 Graduate Manee (B) Lin. Reflecting on the preparation she received at Shrewsbury for life in elite performance music, Yeji commented, "At school I was part of so many ensembles and concerts. I was fully immersed in the music scene, and that really helped prepare me". She continued, "I remember in particular my full recital in my final year at Shrewsbury, and experiences like that meant that when it came to my recent [end of degree] programme recital, I didn't panic. I'm really thankful for the opportunities I had here to develop my musicianship".

Although she majored on Piano, Yeji is also an accomplished harp player, and her captivating performance proved a real and rare treat for the audience, who also enjoyed a concert-completing double act with Hyunsu on flute and Yeji back at the keyboard.

Once again, the recital proved a true celebration of high quality music making, and inspiration for many of our current generation of aspiring young musicians. Our thanks to Hyunsu and Yeji, and also to the Music Department's Mr. J (also a Shrewsbury and RCM alumnus) and Director of Alumni Relations, Stuart Markes for helping to coordinate the evening.
