Future Looks Bright for Shrewsbury’s Newest Squash Champ

Shrewsbury student Sasira (Ireen) Wijitthanarak is Thailand’s under 13 girls squash national champion after prevailing at the 2020 Thailand Squash Championships.

The hard-fought win was followed closely by coach Terry Cheetham who thinks Ireen has enormous potential. Mr Cheetham says if Ireen keeps up her current level, continues to practice and has regular competition, then her future in the sport looks good.

“I was really impressed with Ireen’s commitment. As soon as the lockdown was over she got straight back on the court, and it was like she had never left. It is this kind of tenacity that wins tournaments” he said proudly.

Ireen was not the only Shrewsbury representative on the court during the championships; Third Chamnanchang made the semi-finals in the under-19 event while Ireen’s brothers Jedi and JR both finished 5th in their respective competitions. Ultra Asavareongchai was another of Mr Cheetham’s charges to gain a top-four finish in the under 13 boys event, while Grip Lochanakosin came 7th in the same category.

Mr Cheetham says he was pleased with the outcome of the tournament given the few opportunities to play in recent times and expects results to get even better as the school year progresses.
