Shrewsbury School UK Headmaster visits Shrewsbury International Bangkok for Songkran Festivities and Tea Session

Leo Winkley, Headmaster of Shrewsbury School UK, visited Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, Riverside, during the school’s Songkran Festivities, where he and his family were able to experience traditional Thai customs and learn more about how the ‘Thai New Year’ was celebrated. In addition to that, Lep led a Tea and Topics session, where he spoke about An Insight Into A Shrewsbury Education.

During the session, Leo talked about the campus and how it's nestled on the banks of Britain's longest river - the Severn. Adding to the environment is how the school aims to educate the whole person, focusing on academics and facilitating social development and self-assurance. This mission to educate the ‘Whole Self’ was ingrained into the school’s values since its founding in 1552 by King Edward VI.

On top of achieving academic excellence - a focal point shared by all Shrewsbury schools - Leo also talked about the equal emphasis on sports and performing arts, and a robust House system, students are given ample opportunity to flourish and develop a sense of who they are and what they like. This is where the concept of educating the ‘Whole Self’ comes into play, not only are our students being empowered to achieve their educational goals, but also to find out who they are, and what they like, and to go after that with equal vigor and passion.

Leo also introduced a Shrewsbury School icon, Charles Darwin, a symbol of intellectual curiosity and is also known as a ‘Salopian’ - where his statue can be found on the school grounds to remind students to always remain curious at heart. The ‘Salopian Way’ is another key topic that Leo elaborated on, as it details integral values that Shrewsbury instills in all of our pupils - academic excellence, developing a sense of self, being curious at heart, and always, finding ways to add humor to everything you do.

Visits like this one reinforce the strong bond we have with Shrewsbury School UK, and how we are all aligned and committed to providing exceptional educational experiences for our pupils while ensuring that they are developing themselves as a whole. The importance of curricular and extracurricular activities are equal and these provisions will propel our students to achieve their full potential.

Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, Riverside would like to thank Leo Winkley for visiting us, and we are already looking forward to the next visit!
