A massive congratulations to Year 13, Tan, for his Early Decision Offer to Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts in the US. The offer satisfies a long-held dream for Tan to attend a good university in Boston, a city he has visited on several occasions and has grown to love.
Tan will study Civil Engineering at Northeastern, a school well-known for immersing students in the workforce during their undergraduate careers. Indeed, it regularly places students in paid positions in order to give them real-world experience prior to graduation - something that appealed to Tan immediately.
“I am fascinated by architecture and structural engineering, and North Eastern has a great reputation for these subjects. Being able to spend some time in an actual firm is a real positive for me as I am a hands-on learner.”
Tan has been a Shrewsbury student since EY1 and has been involved in a wealth of different academic, co-curricular and extracurricular subjects - his main passion, however, is sport. He excels at Softball, is a member of the Varsity Football and Basketball squads. He has become an ‘Elite Gold’ Team Shrewsbury member for all these efforts - an honour bestowed on the school’s most committed and successful athletes.
“Sport in the US is pretty competitive at the collegiate level, so I am not sure if I will be able to balance my studies with more than one or two sports, but I would like to play - if not for any other reason than to keep fit.”
Another plus for Tan is the vibrant Thai community in Boston. With several other students from Shrewsbury given Early Offers to other universities in the city - he will not be alone, ensuring that a useful Shrewsbury link will always be nearby.
“I am lucky because my brother also attends Boston University (BU), and the Thai population in the city is considerable. I know of at least two other students in my year group who have offers from Tufts and BU, so we can catch up. I am not looking forward to paying lots of money for Thai food, though, but I will need to have a taste of home sometimes!”
Unsure of whether he will choose to defer in his first year or study online given the current situation with COVID-19, Tan is relaxed about the outcome saying that he wants to finish this year at Shrewsbury well first.
“It is a second home to me, and there is a feeling that it is all coming to an end. I will really miss Shrewsbury and all the people I have met here - It is an exceptional place for me.”
