New Cohort of Drama Scholars

This term, we welcomed a new cohort of Drama Scholars to our school, recognising their exceptional passion and dedication to the craft. They were awarded their Scholar Pins and Ties during a celebratory lunch, marking the start of their journey in their newest role in the school.

After their induction, the scholars began rehearsing for their debut performance of The Trials, a powerful play by Dawn King. Directed by Mr Jack West, the production came together quickly, with students rehearsing every Tuesday and Friday after school in preparation. “Their dedication was evident in every rehearsal,” said Ms Sanders. “They worked tirelessly to bring the intense themes of the play to life.”

The play, set in a dystopian future, follows a jury of young people deciding the fate of three adults whose carbon footprints exceed the global limit. The students’ emotional range and commitment to their characters impressed both the director and the audience. “The scholars explored complex moral dilemmas and heightened emotions, creating a thought-provoking experience for all,” Ms Sanders added.

In total, 15 Drama Scholars, alongside three Year 11 students supporting the final scene, brought the production to life. “The cast worked seamlessly together,” said Ms Sanders. “Their collaboration was key to the performance’s success.”

To become Drama Scholars, students had to write a letter of application, perform a monologue of their choosing, and discuss the rehearsal process. “The scholars demonstrated not only acting talent but also a deep understanding of their craft,” Ms Sanders explained.

Looking ahead, these Drama Scholars will continue to shine in future productions, including The Crucible in March 2025, and in the House Monologues competition, where they will mentor and judge fellow performers. “They’ll help others refine their skills and reach their potential,” Ms Sanders said.
