Two Languages, One Shared Story: Making Learning Visible at HQP
Hanqing Bilingual Pathway HQP Highlights Our Spotlight SHC StoryAt the Hanqing Bilingual Pathway (HQP), learning is about much more than developing language skills. It is about helping children communicate and understand the world around them.
Recently, families were invited to experience Two Languages, One Shared Story, an HQP learning exhibition celebrating the learning journeys of our children. More than displaying final pieces of work, the exhibition made children’s thinking visible, giving families the opportunity to see how learning unfolds through both English and Mandarin experiences at Shrewsbury International School Bangkok City Campus.

Learning Through English and Mandarin Every Day
At HQP, children are immersed in both English and Mandarin through meaningful experiences that naturally connect to their everyday lives.
Rather than learning each language in isolation, children use English and Mandarin as tools to explore ideas, ask questions, express emotions, and build understanding of the world around them.
Throughout the exhibition, families saw how bilingual learning happens in many different ways:
- Listening to and creating stories in English and Mandarin
- Learning new vocabulary through play and real-life experiences
- Expressing ideas through drawings, symbols and movement
- Collaborating through conversations and role play
- Exploring sounds, words and meaning across two languages
This everyday approach allows children to build confidence using both languages naturally and authentically.
As Ms Laura Hales, HQP English Teacher, explained: “We want to make children’s thinking visible and celebrate the many ways they communicate and make meaning.”

Building Language Through Stories and Creativity
Storytelling played a key role throughout the exhibition. In EY2, children explored Helicopter Stories, creating and acting out their own narratives to strengthen communication, confidence, empathy, and vocabulary in both languages.
For younger learners in EY1, mark making has become an important part of their learning journey.
Long before children become confident writers, they communicate through drawings, patterns, symbols and lines. Through painting, drawing and collaborative projects, children begin expressing thoughts and experiences in meaningful ways.
As Ms Belle Yu, HQP Mandarin Teacher, explained: “Because Chinese characters come from pictures, children’s drawings can become natural opportunities for language learning.”
For example, when a child draws a mountain, teachers can introduce the Mandarin word shān (山). Children begin connecting visual images, spoken language and meaning in ways that feel memorable and enjoyable.
These experiences help children see language as something living and meaningful rather than something simply memorised.

Growing Confident Bilingual Learners at HQP
The exhibition highlighted that learning is about more than a final outcome. Every conversation, question, story, and shared experience contributes to a child’s journey of growth and discovery.
At Hanqing Bilingual Pathway (HQP), children learn through a unique bilingual environment where English and Mandarin are lived every day through meaningful experiences. Here, two languages do more than support learning, they open doors to deeper understanding, stronger connections, and a lifetime of possibilities.
