Bilingualism is a Lifelong Gift

Hanqing Bilingual Pathway HQP Highlights SHC Article SHC Story

Now bilingualism is more than just an advantage, it’s a necessity. Over half the world’s population speaks more than one language, and the benefits of bilingualism, especially from an early age, are far-reaching.

In one of our Lecture Series sessions at Shrewsbury International School Bangkok City Campus, “Bilingualism: Language, Cognition and Beyond”, Chiman Estephan (MSLP., ACAS., MSPAA., CPSP), an Australian-Certified Speech Language Pathologist and Deputy Clinical Director at Little Sprouts Children’s Centre, shared powerful insights into how bilingualism supports children’s development socially, culturally, and cognitively.

Cognitive Benefits That Last

Contrary to the myth that learning multiple languages confuses young children, research shows that bilingualism strengthens the brain.

Learning a new language actually reshapes how the brain works. This process enhances neuroplasticity — the brain’s natural ability to form new connections and adapt in response to learning and experience.

Bilingual children often:

  • Perform better in multitasking and focus-based activities.
  • Develop stronger “theory of mind” — understanding others’ thoughts and emotions.
  • Retain sharper cognitive function into older age.

Bilingualism doesn’t just improve language skills, it helps children become better learners overall.

Social and Cultural Connections

Bilingual children grow up with the ability to understand and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. They don’t just learn to speak another language, they learn to understand another culture.

  • They become confident communicators and effective listeners.
  • They recognise and respond to social cues with greater empathy.
  • They often feel a stronger sense of belonging across cultures.
  • They develop a broader worldview from a young age.

Every language brings cultural richness. For example, the Thai word เกรงใจ (to be mindful of others’ feelings) has no direct equivalent in English vocabulary. Bilingual children naturally absorb these cultural nuances and become more socially aware and inclusive.

School and Employment Advantages

The long-term benefits are clear:

  • Bilingual children often achieve higher academic outcomes.
  • Students who take notes in the original language of instruction tend to retain and understand material more efficiently.
  • In the workplace, bilingual adults are highly valued for their communication skills, cultural awareness, and adaptability.

Start Early for Lifelong Impact

The earlier a child is exposed to multiple languages, the more naturally they acquire them. By age 2, children begin picking up vocabulary, and by age 6, they start developing grammar. What matters most is consistent, high-quality exposure.

The Hanqing Bilingual Pathway: A Confident Start in Mandarin and English

At Shrewsbury International School Bangkok City Campus, we offer the Hanqing Bilingual Pathway — a unique Mandarin-English programme beginning in EY1–EY2 (from age 3). With equal focus on both languages, this immersive pathway helps children develop true fluency in a nurturing, stimulating environment.

Led by expert bilingual educators, children grow in confidence, curiosity, and cultural awareness — all while building strong foundations in both Mandarin and English.

Bilingualism is a lifelong gift — and it starts here at Hanginq Bilingual Pathway, Shrewsbury International School Bangkok City Campus.
