“Who I am now is very different from when I initially joined Shrewsbury in EY1. I was not outgoing or eager to participate in class activities. Ms. Shelly was the teacher in EY2 who, in my memory, guided me and encouraged me to participate more in class and with my friends. When I got to Junior School, it was Mr. King who helped me get better at Maths and Literacy. Everything changed significantly when I entered as a Senior. I had wonderful teachers who supported and challenged me. I remembered failing my Chemistry class and Mr. Walton, who was aware of my significant challenges, offered to help me after school and during lunch breaks. During the COVID-19 remote classes, I would always be the last person to leave the Google Meet to inquire more about the classwork. I realised in Sixth Form that my Year 12 was going to be miserable. I had an opportunity to get assistance from Ms. Ermgassen and Mrs. Newbatt, who not only offered me multiple choices for my higher education but also helped me learn how to organise and manage time properly. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster for my whole time here. Even though there may have been many obstacles in my path, I have come a long way from my introverted, shy beginnings to being more self-assured and outgoing inside and outside of the classroom.
My favourite thing about studying in Shrewsbury is that the school enabled us students to go beyond our comfort zone. Here, they pushed us over the limit of what we expected we could reach. Every year of being a student here, I always thought of giving up and just letting it go. However, my friends and teachers always said or did something that would give me the motivation to push myself again. It is always a competition here, and I knew that when I started my Senior years. It could either lead to ruined friendships or to every friend in the group competing with each other so we could reach the destination we always wanted. In the end, I understood the importance of time and why luck seemed to follow those who put in more effort. While doing a ton of homework every day and reviewing content from every class at the same time might be awful, this forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and appreciate every lesson, as well as the after-school support classes the teachers offered to help us.”
