Newsletter - November 2018

News and pictures from City Campus in November 2018.

Dear Parents and Friends,

November seems to have whizzed by and what an incredibly busy and ‘community building’ month it has been!

We have had many opportunities to invite our parents into school to join in with the learning and excitement. Diwali and Loy Krathong were two of the highlights; it was wonderful to see so many parents join our assemblies and also take the time to look the part in traditional dress.

Our author Dr Margaret Read was so impressed with the huge number of parents who came to join her storytelling, she said she had never seen so many parents at an assembly of hers and how lucky we are and how supported she felt. I totally agree. We know that our children love having parents share experiences with them in school.

Our connections across our campuses continue to develop and grow. Our Year 5 children thoroughly enjoyed their joint Year 5 residential with Riverside to Khao Yai. Our Class Reps appreciated their informative conversations here at City Campus with our parent representatives (friends) from Riverside.

Social events have also strengthened our cross campus links with families from both campuses, enjoying ‘Last Night of the Proms’  together and many new connections made at the more recent Ploenchit Fair at the British Embassy.

We  also welcomed our Governors to the school earlier this month; for our UK based Governors it was the first opportunity that have had to see the school complete, open and filled with amazing children. They were impressed, and rightly so.

Our  assemblies have been based on our value of ‘Empathy’ and we have explored what it would be like to walk in somebody else's shoes. We know that this value is closely linked to Respect and Kindness; values we have already focused on.

Our new value focus for December is ‘Happiness’

City Campus ‘Open House’ will continue to take place on Fridays. Please see our website or contact the school for details and timings. Many thanks for continuing to invite your friends to join us.

We look forward to seeing you at our various Christmas parent events over the next couple of weeks.

Seasons Greetings,

Principal, Amanda Dennison

Updates from this month in pictures

Come Dine with Me (Year 3, 4 and 5)

It was the turn of our Key Stage 2 families to join us for ‘Come Dine with Me’ this month. This is a fantastic opportunity for our parents to enjoy a meal in the Kandinsky Curve (our dining hall) with their children.

We at City Campus all understand how important it is that our students are healthy and happy. We serve a wide variety of fresh and nutritious meals that give our children the best platform to learn and play throughout the school day.

Our menu includes a selection of Western and Thai dishes, with vegetarian, Jain and Halal options always available.

Diwali Celebrations

This month, we celebrated our first Diwali at Shrewsbury City Campus.  Our children, parents and staff rose to the occasion by dressing up in beautiful outfits to celebrate the festival.

We held a candle-lit assembly in our Auditorium for our children and families. We learnt lots about the Hindu festival of light throughout the week.

Author Visit: Dr Margaret Read Macdonald

What a delightful time we had with Dr Margaret Read MacDonald! We were treated to stories from all round the world, including Brazil, the USA and Tanzania. Each one of our classes enjoyed folklore workshops with Dr Margaret throughout the school day. Parents were also invited to a special assembly with the author. We were all able to participate in Dr Margaret’s stories, and we were inspired to create our own stories in school and at home.

Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald is an American storyteller, folklorist, and prolific children’s author. She travels the world, telling and bringing back stories from such marvellous places as Mahasarakham, Kota Kinabalu, and Rio. She has written over 65 books, which have been translated into 10 languages.

Year 5 Residential Trip to Khao Yai

Our intrepid Year 5 explorers travelled to Khao Yai National Park for an exciting residential expedition. This was a joint venture with our Shrewsbury Riverside students, and a fantastic opportunity for the children from both campuses to spend time together. Our children built teepees, trekked up into the hills, explored the jungles and enjoyed a barbecue by the campfire. We learnt lots about different climates, environments and map reading!

All our children showed great enthusiasm and determination throughout the trip. Well done everyone - you all did Shrewsbury City Campus proud.

Mike Gatting, former England Cricket Captain Visit

We welcomed Mike Gatting, former England cricket captain, to Shrewsbury City Campus this month. Mike Gatting is one of the UK’s most prolific batsman, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to have some coaching sessions with him. We learnt lots of different bat and ball skills, and Mr Gatting did some individual coaching with our children during the day.

Cricket is a game with history and traditions. Mr Gatting talked about many different life skills with our children, including teamwork, self-esteem and respect.

Some of our children had never played cricket before, and it was great to see their enthusiasm and willingness to learn more about the sport. Our new state-of-the-art sports hall was a fantastic space for us to put our new cricket skills into practice.

Street Food Fair in Year 1

Year 1’s topic this term is Food, Glorious Food! Year 1 enjoyed choosing and purchasing snacks from our own street food stalls, organised by our Year 1 teachers and our fantastic catering team at City Campus.

Here at Shrewsbury City Campus, we use all sorts of opportunities to teach Literacy and Numeracy through exciting practical and problem-solving activities. Learning experiences like a street food fair also enhance our children’s understanding of the world around them. It was fantastic to see our children queueing patiently, thinking about their food choices and working out how much money to spend. Well done Year 1!

Class Reps Meeting with Shrewsbury Parents from Riverside

Our parent representatives from Shrewsbury Riverside joined our reps at City Campus to share ideas and best practice across the two schools. The coffee morning was a perfect opportunity to further strengthen the links in our Shrewsbury community.

Parents, our class representatives are here to help! Please do speak with your Class Rep if you have any comments or questions.

Phloen Chit Fair

We were very busy at this year’s Ploenchit Fair! This year was particularly special, as it was one of the last events to be held in the current UK Embassy site. The embassy will be moving to new premises in 2019.

Shrewsbury International School was represented at the fair by both City Campus and Riverside. The games on our stalls were very popular and we were delighted to welcome familiar and new faces throughout the day. Thank you to all our Shrewsbury City Campus families who came by to say hello. And congratulations to all our prize winners!

Loy Krathong

We celebrated our very first Loy Krathong at City Campus! Our campus was buzzing as parents, children and staff gathered in traditional dress for the celebrations.

Our whole school learnt more about the festival during the week. For example, our Early Years children collected stamps in their Loy Krathong passports whilst they enjoyed play-based experiences all related to the festival.

As Loy Krathong is a festival of water, this was the perfect for the Early Years Hub to officially open it’s fish pond! We were treated to some traditional dance in our outdoor play area, before launching our own krathongs on the water.
