CHAOS & CALAMITY

Year 4 begin their topic of Natural Disasters.

Disaster strikes in Year 4! The children arrived at school to discover that their classrooms and their learning base had been hit by a 'natural disaster'.

The furniture was upturned, items had been displaced and papers torn down...the Natural Disasters day and topic-themed week had begun.

This half term, Year 4 are investigating the topic of Natural Disasters. The children have been immersed in learning through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenges and through other cross-curricular lessons for Art, Science, Computing, Geography and English.

They made tornadoes in jars and landslides and had to design structures that would withstand hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. In Art, the children worked outdoors making giant volcanoes using splatter paint techniques. In Geography, the children went on a fact-finding hunt using QR codes to find information about natural disasters.

In Science and Computing, linked to learning about Sound, the children went on a sound walk around school and made their own pieces of digital music using apps.

At Shrewsbury, we teach a topic-based curriculum to give intrigue and meaning to all subjects that the children study. Our teachers use real-life contexts to bring learning to life.
