Links with Shrewsbury School UK (SSUK)
Shrewsbury School was founded by Royal Charter in 1552. Its grounds of more than 100 acres stretch down to the majestic River Severn and overlook the medieval town of Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire. Until recently, the School served as boarding and day school for boys between the ages of 13 and 18, but since 2013, has now become fully co-educational.
Since opening in 2003, the links with SSUK'S first licensed international sister school in Bangkok have grown stronger and stronger.
Benefiting from a modern, purpose built campus, and comprising a truly international and diverse community, Shrewsbury International School Bangkok embodies the traditions and values of our historic UK counterpart.
Our location on Charoen Krung, the oldest paved road in Bangkok, and on the banks of the mighty Chao Phraya River, also allow instant parallels to be drawn with the historic UK school, which overlooks the River Severn.
The two schools share a commitment to encouraging intellectual curiosity and respecting diversity, and have formed a close and effective partnership over the years. The two schools exchange best practice and perspectives from their own operating contexts via regular staff visits and via Governors who sit on Boards of both schools.
Over the years many SSUK graduates have come to Bangkok to enjoy Gap Year placements working in a range of areas across the Junior and Senior Schools, most notably in the kindergarten, and the English, Music, Drama and PE departments. A number of SSUK alumni and teachers have also gone on to work as full time-employees at Shrewsbury Bangkok.
The musical links between the two schools are particularly strong. SSUK’s Director of Music, John Moore, travels to Bangkok in October each year to conduct in the hugely popular 'Last Night of the Proms' concert.
Shrewsbury International (Asia)
Following the successful development of Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, ambitious plans are now underway to expand to other areas in Asia. A development group, Shrewsbury International (Asia) has been established to manage the creation of a group of schools, starting with a new Primary School in Hong Kong (opening 2018). The Group will also oversee extensive investment and redevelopment at the original Bangkok campus.
Shrewsbury International School, Hong Kong
In 2015, we were pleased to announce that, Shrewsbury had been awarded an operating license to open a second international school in Tseung Kwan O (Siu Chik Sha) district, Hong Kong. The school is due to open in September 2018, and will initially operate as a co-educational Junior School for up to 850 children aged 5 to 11 years.
The license was awarded against stiff competition, underpinned by the Board’s ambitious plans and genuine commitment to providing quality international education in the local community, as well as the organization’s proven credentials and international reputation.
