Sixth Form
the head of sixth form writes:
The Sixth Form experience at Shrewsbury International School is distinctly different. Just as students start to set their sights on life beyond the school gates, so the physical environment, the style of teaching and the levels of responsibility evolve to reflect the rising lines of sight. In the Sixth Form, we offer you a range of AS and A level subjects to choose from, and a team of highly experienced Sixth Form teachers all of whom are specialists in their field.

sixth form facilities
The newly completed Sixth Form Centre is one of the finest facilities the school has to offer, reflecting the range of needs of our Year 12 and 13 students. You will benefit from outstanding study facilities and a dedicated Careers Library, with breathtaking views of the river. More relaxed work and friendly conversation is an important part of Sixth Form life, and the new centre has a specially designed common room, with generous kitchen facilities and outside balconies. Seminar rooms have been designed to compliment the new Sixth Form Centre and make a perfect space for smaller groups to work and debate.
motivation and management
There is much emphasis in Sixth Form work on acquiring and applying skills, as well as knowledge for its own sake. University Admissions Tutors and employers are increasingly looking for students whose knowledge ranges across a wide spectrum and is not confined to a narrow field. You will be increasingly encouraged to take control of your own learning, and organise your study programme in an effective way. All of you will have an experienced personal tutor whose task it is to provide support and guidance during your time with the school.
your future
Many of you will be thinking about what lies beyond school. During your time at Shrewsbury you will have access to a wide range of career and higher education resources and will be supported in the applications that you make by your personal tutor, the Head of Sixth Form and the Head of Careers. Many representatives from overseas universities visit the school each year to give inside advice about individual universities and how to make successful applications. Having a well stocked Higher Education and Careers Library in the Sixth Form Centre means that you can carry out research at any convenient time, and can easily call upon the support of your personal tutor.
other activities
Success in examinations is very important, but there is more to being a Sixth Form student than this. There are opportunities to become involved in a wide range of activities both inside and outside school. This will give you opportunities to demonstrate leadership skills by taking a high profile role in helping to organise events. Our Sixth Formers are by definition, school leaders and are active role models for younger pupils. The School Prefects and The Sixth Form Council meet with the school’s senior managers to shape the development of the school and, day by day, they become more intimately involved in defining what makes Shrewsbury International School special. In addition, we look to our Sixth Form students to give back to the community and become involved in the School’s many charitable activities. A Year 12 Sixth Form Charity Committee has been established; an exciting opportunity for leadership and initiative.
Above all, the Sixth Form provides a structure in which you can learn in a well-supported academic environment while also participating in extra-curricular activities with like-minded people. The Sixth Form provides a transition between the world of school and the world of university or employment. It encourages you to become more independent, and more personally responsible for organising your time and study. In the Sixth Form you are at the pinnacle of school education.
