Thai Studies

Our Aim

Thai Studies at Shrewsbury International School offers the highest standard of learning for both native Thai and expatriate students. Pupils are encouraged to be aware of and to appreciate the significance of Thai culture as well as learning the Thai language at an appropriate level.

Curriculum

Thai language and culture plays a crucial role in the curriculum, which has been written in accordance with the Thai Ministry of Education's requirements, and both the social and cultural conditions in Thailand.

For our Thai pupils, it is important that they maintain strong roots to their native language and home culture, even as they expand their horizons internationally. For non-Thai students, the curriculum focuses on everyday use, as well as developing positive attitudes to language learning in general and helping them appreciate their host country's language, culture and local wisdom.

Key Stage 3

The curriculum for native Thai pupils in Years 7 to 9 is based on Thailand’s National Curriculum, which provides essential foundations for the Cambridge University IGCSE courses offered later in Key Stage 4. The curriculum for expatriate students is aimed at the further development of their skills and understanding in the standard Thai language, working toward an ability to speak, listen, read and write, and respond appropriately for different purposes and audiences. There is also a strong focus on pupils’ appreciation of Thai culture.

Key Stage 4

In Years 10 and 11, pupils whose mother tongue is Thai follow a curriculum that prepares them for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examination. Candidates are assessed in three categories: Reading and Directed Writing, Continuous Writing and Usage. For Non-Thai students, the curriculum is designed to encourage pupils to apply their Thai language skills in daily life, and they also continue to deepen their understanding of Thai culture and tradition.
