Science
The Science Department believes in quality. This is exemplified by the wide variety of state-of-the-art equipment used in frequent practical sessions as well as the high standard of teaching. All Science lessons in the Senior school, and an increasing number in the junior school, take place in spacious and well designed modern laboratories, allowing extensive practical work to be carried out to back up theoretical work and stimulate interest in the fascinating world around us.
Keys Stage 3
In Years 7, 8 and 9, the UK National Curriculum is used as a framework to be improved upon and made more relevant to students living in Thailand. In Years 7 and 8, Science lessons are taught in modules by a single teacher.
The modules for Year 7 are: Cells, Variation and Classification; Reproduction, Environment and Feeding Relationships; Acids and Alkalis; Simple Chemical Reactions; Solids, Liquids and Gases; Energy Resources; Electrical Circuits; Forces and their Effects.
In Year 8: Microbes and Disease; Food and Digestion; Respiration; Solutions, Atoms and Elements, Compounds and Mixtures; the Rock Cycle and Weathering; Light, Heating and Cooling; Sound; Magnets and Electromagnets.
In Year 9 the work becomes more focused; lessons are taught by subject specialists in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The modules taught in Biology are: Fit and Healthy; Plants and Photosynthesis; Inheritance and Selection. In Chemistry: Reactions of Metals and Metal Compounds; Patterns of Reactivity; Using Chemistry; Environmental Chemistry. In Physics: Energy and Electricity; Speeding Up; Pressure and Moments; Gravity and Space. In addition, the Year 9 students who show a particular aptitude for Science during Year 8, or those entering Year 9 from other schools who have been identified as having a lot of potential in Science, start a three-year Cambridge IGCSE course in the three separate Science subjects.
Keys Stage 4
In Years 10 and 11, the Cambridge IGCSE coordinated Science syllabus is followed, which is the equivalent of 2 IGCSE subjects. For those studying the three separate Science subjects, started in year 9, they continue with these. Science, either as co-ordinated or separate sciences, is compulsory at IGCSE level. The majority of our students sit the extension level examinations where they achieve grade C or above. Students are taught in sets at this age, allowing those students who struggle a little more to be taught in smaller groups, whilst others can be given more challenging work.
Sixth Form
A high proportion of the students in the 6th form continue to study one or more of the three sciences offered at AS and A level, following the Edexcel syllabuses. Many then continue to study Science subjects at Universities throughout the world.
