Music

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 and 8, pupils at Key Stage 3 currently receive 2 lessons of specialist classroom music per week. In Year 9 pupils receive 3 lessons per week. The newly developed “Opus” series of books is used as a basic resource supplemented by a wide variety of other books. A broad brush is used to cover music from a variety of approaches whilst still retaining rigour to the 3 areas of listening, composing and performing. Pupils may also use a variety of music software programmes to assist them in the compositional process. Those pupils who play orchestral instruments are also encouraged to utilize their skills in these classroom sessions when appropriate.

Key Stages 4

Music is optional for students at Key Stage 4. We adopt the Cambridge IGCSE Music syllabus; this enables students to demonstrate their abilities across the three areas stipulated by the National Curriculum Document for Music. The grade range is from A-E, but invariably pupils who elect to pursue music at IGCSE are accomplished instrumentalists and therefore usually advantaged.

Sixth Form

Academic Music in the Sixth Form, i.e Key Stage 5, is delivered via the 2 year Edexcel syllabus leading to either the AS award level or the A2 (full) award. It is an integral part of the music department philosophy to ingrain music performances as a part of the daily routine at Shrewsbury International School.
