Modern Foreign Languages

Our aim is for our students to become confident, fluent and eloquent in a Modern Foreign Language (MFL). Simultaneously, the students will be finding out about the people, country, culture and history of the countries in which the language is spoken. We make the very best use of modern technology (Interactive whiteboards, web-based resources, ICT and other media) to compliment and enhance our teaching of the communicative and grammatical elements of the target language.

Pupils are able to choose from French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. Specialist language teaching begins in Year 3 and is compulsory until the end of Year 9. All four language options are available at GCSE and A Level.

Key Stage 3

Our work at this stage is to develop the linguistic confidence of our pupils in all areas of the language. We encourage pair- and group-work to improve speaking skills and to develop collaborative learning practices. We aim to broaden the vocabulary and consolidate the pupil’s understanding of the grammar needed in order to continue successfully to GCSE.

Key Stage 4

At GCSE level the students will follow the Edexcel syllabus. The four language skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) all carry equal weighting in the exam and this is reflected in the planning and delivery of lessons. We make extensive use of the most up-to-date course books (and associated ICT packages) and supplement their use with additional examination based materials.

Sixth Form

At A Level we follow the Edexcel syllabus for all of the MFL choices. The emphasis at this stage is on a deepening understanding of the target language countries and their associated cultures. A high degree of fluency is developed and the students are encouraged to explore research and discuss issues using the language being studied.
