Mathematics
The Senior Mathematics Department provides specialist teaching from Year 7 to Year 13.
Key Stage 3
The curriculum for pupils in Year 7 to Year 9 is based on the National Curriculum for England and Wales. Each pupil is issued with a textbook but the department does not adhere to any published scheme. Instead, activities are drawn from a wide variety of resources and include opportunities to use and apply mathematical knowledge, to investigate practical problems and to use ICT appropriately.
Pupils are grouped according to ability, to allow each individual to access the curriculum, to enjoy learning mathematics and to maximise progress. Half-term tests and end-of-year examinations ensure that pupils are placed in the correct set.
Key Stage 4
In Year 10 and 11 pupils follow a curriculum that prepares them for IGCSE Mathematics at extended level (grades A-E) or core level (grades C-G). Mathematics is a compulsory subject at KS4 and most pupils follow the extended syllabus, taking the examination towards the end of Year 11. Some pupils are selected to sit the IGCSE examination a year early; they have the opportunity to study A/S Mathematics in Year 11.
Sixth Form
In Year 12, those students who have succeeded at IGCSE level may opt to take A/S level Mathematics, studying Pure Mathematics and either Mechanics or Statistics. In Year 13, most choose to continue on to the full A level course, the 'gold standard' of British Education. Those pupils who have achieved an A* grade at IGCSE level may opt for Further Mathematics. They complete the full A level Mathematics course in one year and, in Year 13, study for an additional A level award called Further Mathematics. This course introduces some university level Pure Mathematics and incorporates both Mechanics and Statistics.
