History / Geography

The Humanities curriculum throughout the primary school is broad and balanced. It respects the best practices of the National Curriculum guidelines of England and Wales, with all the topics based on the QCA schemes of work.

However it is understood here at Shrewsbury that due to the truly international nature of our school, it is imperative not to enforce a singular national identity onto our pupils. Instead the National Curriculum has been specifically adapted to suit our unique position, with a greater emphasis being placed on developing pupils understanding of their position and responsibilities within a greater world community.

There is an underlying approach to the teaching of both History and Geography that recognises each pupil's uniqueness and therefore the need to adapt the curriculum, differentiating when appropriate, in order to meet the specific needs of each pupil.

All the topics are meaningful to the children taking note of their current environment and utilising our fantastic location, providing excellent opportunities for geographical field work and historical research. Whether pupils are conducting a river study on the Chao Phraya River, or researching the history of the Charoen Krung road, our school location has provided an excellent platform for learning.

Our fieldwork however is not limited to our locality as pupils are provided with opportunities to venture further a field; such as the year 6 residential to Chiang Rai; bringing pupils face to face with the mighty Mekong River, or the year 5 residential to Kanchanaburi; allowing pupils to explore the death railway and its infamous history.

Overall the humanities curriculum is carefully fashioned to foster, encourage and celebrate all of our children's international identities, both past and present.
