Design Technology

What is Design Technology?

Design Technology can be thought of as the creative appliance of science; the place where Art meets Science.  The subject of Design Technology covers a wide range of activities and skills.  Primarily, it is about SOLVING PROBLEMS and FULFILLING NEEDS. These problems and needs have answers that are sometimes graphical, sometimes mechanical or electronic and increasingly involving the use of CAD/CAM, ICT and other specialist tools and machines.

Key Stage 2

A solid foundation is laid at this time in what for the students is a new and exciting subject.  Various projects introduce its basic framework or concept - including the 'design process' - as well as starting to develop the pupil's more subject-specific capabilities.  Students learn a wide range of design strategies and techniques as well as how to use a range of hand tools and machinery safely and confidently.  Design Technology is also a great subject for teaching pupils the value of life skills such as problem solving, meeting deadlines and independence, as they work through lengthy and challenging projects.
