Art

At Shrewsbury we teach art through stimulating the children's creativity and imagination. Our aim is to develop their understanding of colour, form, texture and pattern through their own hands on experience, as well as through the study of famous artists, crafts people and designers and their influence in different times and cultures.

The scheme of work is planned to ensure continuity and progression throughout the school. This scheme helps children to explore and develop their ideas, investigate and make, evaluate and develop their work and thus increase their knowledge and understanding of the subject. All the children are given the opportunity to work with a variety of materials and tools. They learn to draw, paint, print, create collages, work with fabric and in 3D. In Early Years and Year 1 & 2 they experience most of these areas each term. In Year 3 - 6 children work on longer projects and therefore visit these areas each year.

There are many opportunities to link art to other subjects and this is explored where appropriate. This includes the use of computers which provides a stimulating additional tool for designing and creating images.

At Shrewsbury we strive to create a positive and enjoyable atmosphere, where children work safely and feel able to explore their ways of expressing and communicating what they see, think and feel.
