House System
Aims and Objectives
At Shrewsbury School UK, the House System was first introduced over 300 years ago where it encouraged personal responsibility amongst its pupils. These smaller school communities engender healthy rivalry in friendly games and other extra-curricular activities, building team skills, leadership skills and co-operation.
In September 2007 Shrewsbury International School introduced the House System into its thriving school life.
Pupils join a House in Year 1 and belong to their House until they leave. The House System will help build an individual's strengths within a group and create a bond with other pupils of all ages.
As pupils reach their senior years at the school they will become increasingly involved in running their Houses and co-ordinating House activities.
Organisation
Students at Shrewsbury International School will be assigned to one of six houses. The house system will provide the framework for students’ extra- curricular activities, encouraging participation in sporting and cultural activities and promoting leadership development. In addition the students will select their after school activities depending upon their assigned house.
Ethos
There will be a keen, but good-natured rivalry between the six Houses to see who will win the coveted House Shield each year. Points towards this prize will be accumulated from the various sporting and cultural competitions that are held throughout the year.
In the Junior School, these will include: Cross Country, Inter House Games, Athletics Carnivals and Music and Drama contests.
In the Senior School, the competition includes the three major Sports terms, Cross Country, Sports Day, Swimming Carnival as well as Drama, Musical, Choir, Instrumental and Debating Competitions.
During the Students “You-Time!” activities they will also be involved in accumulating points for their house through competitive but friendly competitions.
In the classroom environment, and around the school, students can gain house points for displaying positive behaviour, including completing work well, going out of their way to help others and showing initiative. Points can also be deducted for negative behaviour.
