Counselling
Overview
Shrewsbury International School Counselling centre is staffed by a professionally trained, certified, and experienced full time counsellor dedicated to serving junior and senior school students, parents, and teachers.
The philosophical underpinning of our counselling office is to support the academic success and personal growth of all students through assisting students with the development of appropriate social and emotional competencies, as well as to help resolve academic, personal, and/or social problems. Counselling is also offered to assist senior students in their career exploration and college selection processes.
Delivery of counselling services to students may take one of the following forms:
(1) Individual Planning:
This consists of activities that help students plan, monitor, and manage their educational, individual, social, and/or career goals. The focus is in assisting each student to develop, analyse, and plan educational, occupational, and individual pathways through talk therapy, problem-solving, and the promotion of awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses.
(2) Responsive Service:
Responsive services are preventive and/or interventive activities to meet students’ immediate needs or concerns. Sometimes, the usual happy flow of a student’s life is hampered by strong or negative experiences or feelings. He or she may experience seemingly unmanageable challenges in his or her attempts to succeed academically or socially. At such times, the counsellor is ready to give individual, caring attention to the student’s needs in a private, confidential appointment.
Counselling is generally on a voluntary basis, which means that a student seeks guidance from the counsellor by him/herself. However, in the event where teachers or parents feel that a student might benefit from guided help, they may share that concern with the student and the counsellor, and arrange for the student to meet with the counsellor.
