shrewsbury international school
Admissions
Participation in all aspects of school life and the educational benefit which ensues, requires a command of English language which is the medium of teaching and learning. The School's admission policy requires all pupils to be assessed for admission and for those applying for placement in year 3 and above there is an English language test. However, assessment of numeracy and non-verbal reasoning abilities aims to recognise academic potential rather than highlight low levels of English. Very young children, who absorb language as part of their normal development are not expected to have high language ability. Review of a prospective pupil's ability and suitability for a place at Shrewsbury will include reference to recent reports/academic transcripts from current and previous schools.
The School seeks to ensure that the balance of pupil nationalities does not compromise either Ministry of Education requirements or its status as an international school or the position of English as the medium of tuition and the 'lingua franca' of the pupil body.
The School considers that all pupils have individual needs and attention to these is part of our educational provision. When special needs problems emerge during a pupil's time at Shrewsbury, the School will endeavour to provide support and parents may be directed towards specialist external agencies for other assistance.
Admissions to the School and allocation to particular year groups are authorized only by the Principal, who is advised by the Vice-Principals, as Heads of the Junior and Senior Schools.

Our Assessment Procedure
Shrewsbury International School's assessment procedures identify candidates who show promising academic potential and proven ability. The assessment covers written numeracy, non-verbal-reasoning and English language testing. There is also an interview with a trained assessor.
Based on the assessment and other information, the Principal determines if a place in the school is appropriate for the candidate. The offer of a place may be unconditional or, for very able candidates who need to improve their English language ability, dependent on enrolling for an additional English Support programme provided by the school.
Other Information
Progress between the Pre-Prep and the Prep School is unconditional but transfer into the Senior School at the end of Year 6 is dependent upon a promising academic performance. Similarly, the school expects students to progress into the Sixth Form at the end of Year 11 supported by a strong profile of IGCSE grades and encouraging reports.
Shrewsbury International School is open to pupils of all nationalities.
