      <title>Shrewsbury International School students are top in the world</title>

Am’s achievement is all the more impressive given that he took the exam one year early.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;In the A Level examinations there was further success in the creative arts at Shrewsbury with Tanya Grueneberger receiving the Top in Thailand award in Art and Design. Tanya is now studying Visual Art and Psychology at Boston University in the US.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards are an annual celebration of success in IGCSE, A Level and AS Level Cambridge International Examinations.  Awards were given to 14 Shrewsbury International students for exam taken in November 2010 and June 2011 across a wide range of academic and creative subjects.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Six students received awards for outstanding achievement in all the IGCSE exams they sat in June 2011.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;As well as being named Top in Thailand for Physics IGCSE, Napat (Pecky) Leelathuwanont was first place across nine Cambridge IGCSEs. Shanabodee (Merck) Paisalachpong took third place in the same category.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Cindy Horng, who was Top in Thailand in IGCSE English Literature, was first place across eight Cambridge IGCSEs and Varinthorn (Pear) Banjurtrungkajorn, who was also Top in Thailand in Physics, took first place across seven subjects.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The students will receive a certificate for their achievements at a ceremony, where they will be presented with their award by the British Ambassador to Thailand, Asif Amhad.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Stefanie Leong, Senior Schools Development Manager at CIE Thailand, said: “The winning students outperformed thousands of candidates worldwide who sat examinations in Cambridge IGCSE, AS Level and A Level so it is a tremendous achievement. A great deal of hard work and dedication from the learners as well as support from their schools and families are behind these awards.” &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;These awards are testament to the outstanding success that our students achieved across the board in their IGCSE, AS Level and A Level exams. The number of students who gained A* passes at A Level soared to 26% which was more than double last year’s total. Napassorn (Beaut) Chaimanowong was Highly Commended.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The Sir David Lees awards are Honorary Scholarships that mark outstanding results at A Level. The 2011 winners were Wen Li Toh who gained 5 A* passes and who will take up an offer to read English at Cambridge University; Peranat (Air) Dayananda, earning 4 A* passes, who is now studying at Johns Hopkins in the US; and Nattapat (Earth) Chaimanowong gaining 3 A*, who will read Natural Sciences at Trinity College.  Highly Commended was Thanatad (Tee) Ruengsukslip.  &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The men for whom these scholarships are named are distinguished leaders in their respective fields and have close links with Shrewsbury International School. Sir David Lees currently sits on the Board of Governors here at Shrewsbury and is Chairman to the Court of the Bank of England. More than a quarter (26%) of these passes were at the very highest A* grade – more than doubling last year’s total of 12% and easily surpassing the national average in the UK of 8%.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The results were so good that 95% of students in the Class of 2011 were able to take up places at their 1st choice university –primarily in the US or the UK.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;One student, Wenli Toh attained 5 A* passes and will take up a place reading English at Cambridge University in the UK, while another student Peranat (Air) Dayananda achieved 4 A* passes. He will study at Johns Hopkins University in the US. Joining Air in the US is Chawina De-Eknamkul who has won a place at UCLA.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;There was a clean sweep for the students who had applied to Oxford and Cambridge with all of them gaining the grades they needed to take up their places. Nattapat (Earth) Chaimanowong, who gained 3 A* passes and 1 A grade, will read Natural Sciences at Trinity College Cambridge, and Thanatad (Tee) Ruengsuksilp will also read Natural Sciences at nearby Magdalene College.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Over at Oxford, Noppawee (Note) Apichonpongpan got 3 passes at A* and A grade and will study Mathematics and Computer Science at Keble College Oxford. Among the success stories from the leading London colleges, Nissara (Pine) Thakolsri gained 4 A Level passes at A* and A grade to study at the London School of Economics.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The IGCSE results were also outstanding. Percentages showed that students passed 37% of their exams at A* grade. This compares to 35% last year. Chatu Mongol Sonakul, Chairman of the Bank of Thailand. The delegation from Shrewsbury, led by School Principal Stephen Holroyd, formed an impressive group among the international schools gathered to receive their awards. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Year 13 student  Wen Li Toh was named Top in the World for English Literature AS Level as well as winning a High Achievement award for her Geography AS Level results. Singaporean Wen Li, who won two awards for her IGCSEs results last year, has also received an offer to study English at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.  Brenda Wong, our head girl who is from Malaysia, collected her Top in Thailand award for Business Studies AS Level. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;A further 5 Year 12 students went to collect their awards for their IGCE results. Our biggest award haul belonged to Bunyada (Mos) Laoprapassorn who was awarded first place in Best across 8 IGCSEs as well as being named Best in Thailand for her Biology, Physics and Information &amp;amp; Communications IGCSE results. She was closely followed by Siriwimol (Joy) Phophichitra who won second place in Best across 8 IGCSEs.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Sirin (Lee) Charasyosvuthichai came away with an armful of awards after being named Top in the World for Business Studies IGCSE and Top in Thailand for English as a Second Language IGCSE as well as achieving first place in Best across 7 IGCSEs. Overall, Shrewsbury took the top 3 places for Best across 7 IGCEs with Kwannpat (Pop) Songvisit and Nicha (Cherry) Wongphanlert collecting their awards for second and third place respectively.  &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;A number of students who left last year were also recognised by CIE for their outstanding results, although they were not present to receive their awards as they are all undertaking their undergraduate studies overseas.  &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Chayo Tantivasin, who is studying Economics at Manchester University, and Gavin Opaswongkarn, now at Royal Holloway University reading Politics and International Relations, shared the Top in Thailand award for A Level Business Studies. Don Jamkajornkeiat, who is studying Mathematics at Imperial College London, won Top in Thailand for A Level Economics. More than 80% of the grades were at B grade or above (up from 78% last year) with 12% being awarded the new A* grade – compared to an average of 8% of A Levels gained at schools in the UK. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Three students Don Jamkajornkeiat, Parinda (Prim) Wangwongwiroj and Koravee (Vee) Lapprathan all gained three A* passes each as well as other passes at A or B grade.&lt;br/&gt;Don and Vee have now both accepted offers to read Mathematics at Imperial College London while Prim will major in Physical Sciences at UCLA in the US.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Three other students: Tonkla Balankura, Sahil Ghandi and Deepanshu Kalra, all gained five A Level passes at A* or A grade.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;In October, our graduating A Level students will be taking up places at top universities such as University College London in the UK and Yale in the US and University of British Colombia in Canada. Pavika (Pudjeeb) Buddhari will major in architecture at MIT in the US. There were superb successes in the Arts also, with Diana Horng taking up a place at Pratt Institute to study Fashion Design and Heewon Woo winning a scholarship to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. &lt;br/&gt;</description>
